Sodium Toluene Sulfonate

Handling and Storage
Safety and Emergency
Application and Properties

Keep it in a dry and properly ventilated place in 20 oC. When it is not used the lid must be thoroughly closed. Keep it away from freezing. This substance crystallizes at 10 oC. Use polypropylene drums for carrying.

In case of a fire accident use water spray, dry chemical such as carbon dioxide or fire extinguishing foam.

The result of thermal decomposition would be carbon oxides and sulfur oxides. This substance is not inflammable, however, because of probable existence of the slight amount of toluene, keep it away from sources of spark and fire when storing. When working with this substance use gloves and goggles. In case of contact with skin, rinse it out immediately with plenty of water and see physician if irritation and allergy continues.

As a hydrotrope has a positive effect on slurry viscosity and STPP hydration during manufacture of detergent products.Using this substance, sodium carbonate can be easily used as the builder in washing powder formulation. It can also be used in the following cases:

To improve solubility of poly phosphates in detergents and as the stabilizer in solutions and suspensions. To improve heterogeneous reactions

In extraction of the organic substances from solvents to reduce viscosity of colloidal dispersions

As the hydrotrope, stabilizer and solvent of dyestuffs in textile industry. In plating and manufacturing of colors and polymers.

Sodium toluene sulfonate is a toluene sulfonate ester used in organic chemical reactions as an alkylating agent, non-oxidizing catalyst, intermediate for the synthesis of biologically active compounds, and supporting electrolyte for depositing polypyrrole membranes. Sulfonates are salts or esters of sulfonic acid. Sulfonic salts are soluble in water. Sulfonic acid and its salts present in organic dyes provide useful function of water solubility and or improve the wash fastness of dyes due to their capability of binding more tightly to the fabric. They are widely used in the detergent industry. Alkyl benzene sulfonic acid is the largest-volume synthetic surfactant because of its relatively low cost, good performance, the fact that it can be dried to a stable powder and the biodegradable environmental friendliness. Sulfonate cleaners do not form an insoluble precipitates in hard water. Sulfonic acid salts and esters are intermediates widely used in organic synthesis and particularly phenolic compounds and cation exchange resins. They are synthetic intermediates for a number of biologically active compounds and pharmaceutical candidates such as sulfa drugs. They are used as adhesives and sealant chemicals. Sodium toluene sulfonate was used as a supporting electrolyte for depositing polypyrrole membranes. It was also used as a solute to study the performance of resin particles.
